Top things to do in Dubai

Burj Khalifa

The world's tallest building (828m). Level 124/125 'At the Top' or Level 148 'Sky' with lounge service. The Dubai Fountain performs below every 30 min after dark.

Cost: 124/125 from AED 169 · 148 from AED 399 · Tip: Sunset slots cost more AND sell out — book 1–2 weeks ahead. Watch the 6pm fountain show FROM the tower, then go down to the waterfront for the 8pm one.

Desert safari

4x4 dune bashing, sandboarding, camels, and a Bedouin-camp dinner with fire shows under stars — the classic Dubai evening.

Cost: Group AED 150–250 · private AED 600+ · Tip: Pick-up 3pm, back by 9:30pm. Skip breakfast-lunch if motion-sensitive; dune bashing is a rollercoaster. Ask for the 'quiet' car if pregnant/backs.

Old Dubai — Al Fahidi, souks & abra

The pre-oil city: wind-tower houses in Al Fahidi historic district, gold and spice souks, and a AED 1 wooden abra boat across the Creek.

Cost: Abra AED 1 · souks free · Tip: Gold souk: bargaining applies to making charges, not gold price. Spice souk: photograph stalls only after buying something small.

Palm Jumeirah & The View

The palm-shaped island — Atlantis hotel, beach clubs (Nikki Beach), and The View observation deck over the fronds.

Cost: The View AED 100 · beach clubs daybed AED 200–500 min · Tip: The monorail ride down the palm trunk is half the fun. Boardwalk sunset with Atlantis behind you is free.

Dubai Mall + Aquarium

1,200 shops, but the real show is free: the 10M-liter aquarium window, the waterfall, and the fountain plaza.

Cost: Mall free · aquarium from AED 169 · Tip: Come 5–9pm: fountain shows on the hour, dinner with a fountain-view terrace (book ahead).

Museum of the Future

The calligraphy-clad torus — 7 floors of 2071: space stations, DNA libraries, Amazon-forest floors. Genuinely well-executed, not a gimmick.

Cost: AED 149 · Tip: Timed tickets sell out days ahead — book online. 2–3 hours; the Heal Institute (forest) floor is the highlight.

What to eat

  • Shawarma — The AED 5–10 street staple. Al Mallah (Satwa) or Ravi (Punjabi institution, 24h).
  • Emirati breakfast — Chebab (saffron pancakes), balaleet, khameer bread at Arabian Tea House (Al Fahidi). AED 50–80.
  • Machboos — Emirati spiced rice with chicken/fish — the national dish. Al Ustad Special Kebab (old-school, cash-only).
  • Gold-cappuccino luxury — Yes it's a gimmick, yes try it once — Burj Khalifa's Armani Café or Atlantis' Kaleidoscope. AED 60–80.

Where to stay

  • Downtown / Business Bay — Burj Khalifa, fountain, malls — the postcard Dubai Best for: First visit, icons
  • Dubai Marina / JBR — Skyline waterfront, beach, yacht life, walkable promenade Best for: Beach + dining, couples
  • Deira / Bur Dubai (old city) — Souks, creek, budget hotels, authentic food Best for: Value, culture, food
  • Palm Jumeirah — Resorts, beach clubs, quiet luxury Best for: Resort stays, honeymoon

Dubai FAQ

How many days do you need in Dubai?

Four days: icons (Burj Khalifa, fountain), old Dubai + souks, a desert safari, and Palm/beach day. Add Abu Dhabi (Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi) as a 5th-day trip (90 min).

When is the best time to visit Dubai?

November–March: 24–30°C, beach weather, outdoor season. June–September exceeds 45°C — malls, museums and hotels are freezing inside; only visit then for deep deals.

Is Dubai expensive?

Flexible: $120–250/day mid-range. Hotels and attractions are the cost centers (Burj Khalifa AED 169+, safaris AED 200). Street food (shawarma AED 7) and the metro balance it out.

What should I wear in Dubai?

Malls and downtown: normal international dress is fine. Mosques: covered shoulders/knees, headscarf for women (abayas loaned free at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque). Old Dubai: modest = fewer stares.

Is alcohol available in Dubai?

Yes, in licensed hotel bars/restaurants and a few marina venues (tourists can buy temporary liquor licenses for some venues). No drinking in public, zero tolerance for DUI. Prices are high — hotel happy hours matter.
